In 2000 at Manhattan’s Town Hall, I photographed Mozambique’s Dance Troupe for my “African Dance in Slow Motion Series.” From the balcony, my Nikon captured their unified energy and vibrant costumes, buzzing like queen bees. Each manual click thrilled me, proving true art comes when the photographer feels the moment.

Queen Bees

I work in series, forming bodies of work with a consistent and creative thought pattern. This 2000-year-old photograph taken at Town Hall in Manhattan, NY, is part of my “African Dance in Slow Motion Series.” The group is the Dance Troupe of Mozambique.

When I first entered the Hall, I was situated at eye level. Poor promotion resulted in too many empty seats; however, the ground level wasn’t hitting it. I was shooting up, too low, very boring. You see, I have to feel the shot, get excited about the images I’m capturing. If I’m not excited, I know my audience won’t feel or relate to its beauty.

I looked up. The first row of the balcony was empty, so I scurried up the stairs and there it was, a whole new view of the stage and dancers. I believe my 35mm Nikon lens gave me the perfect perspective to create this gem. As they moved about in unison, their clothing and energy gave me a buzzing feeling. At the time I was shooting manually, no automatic advancing or shutter, whereby, each touch sent thrills throughout my body and ‘that’s a good thing! ‘
