Conversations With Grandma
In 1983, my good friend Bongos asked me to photograph the compound where he grew up in downtown Lagos Island, which held many of his childhood memories, called Layeni Court. Because of the building’s age and the government’s modernization of the area, he thought they were going to tear it down. After covering the whole compound, I found myself humbled in the presence of his grandmother and grandchildren (finding the child hidden between the chairs came only after enlargement). The smile on Bongo’s face that day was priceless and when he received the pictures, he was blown away!
‘It was a good day!’
