In 1981, while photographing the Brothers Johnson at Lagos’ Bar Beach, a Fulani man in white quietly approached Valerie, one of their dancers. After he whispered to her, she returned, visibly moved. When we asked what he said, she replied, “He told me things I had never heard.”

Description

Listen to Me

In 1981, Paul of Time Insurance assigned me the coverage contract of photographing George and Louis of the Brothers Johnson on their sightseeing visit to Bar Beach on Victoria Island in Lagos, along with their backup dancers Miriam and Valerie. It was a beautiful day! The beach was full of hazy sunshine as saltwater breezes caressed our faces. As we stood in the sand, taking in the warm, fresh air, tides rolling in one after another, a Fulani gentleman, dressed in white, approached Valerie ( a Chicago native) and in a low voice softly spoke into her ear. When the encounter ended and the gentleman made his way, Valerie returned to us and when asked what was said, she would only say, “He told me things I had never heard.”
