Femi Kuti

Price range: $1,000.00 through $3,500.00

In 2002 at Prospect Park, I photographed Femi Kuti electrifying Brooklyn with Afrobeat, echoing his father’s legacy. I’d first captured him in ’82 at Fela’s Shrine. Decades later, watching Femi accept a Grammy Hall of Fame award for Fela’s Zombie proved Afrobeat’s roots and leaves continue to inspire worldwide.

Description

Femi Kuti

Whenever Femi hit NYC, he would light up the evening. It was 2002 at Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York, as Femi hit the audience hard with his Afrobeat rhythms, reminiscent of his father’s high-energy stage presence, along with two beautiful back-up singers/dancers, combining entertainment with education.

I first photographed Femi in ’82 at the Shrine in Ikeja as he accompanied Fela and the Egypt ’80 Band. Femi and Seun, his younger brother, have carried the legacy of his father’s pioneering of Afrobeat music into today’s generation.

Recently (2025), Femi, on behalf of his deceased father Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, accepted the award honoring Fela’s 1976 album, “Zombie,” into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

‘A tree has roots and leaves to be shared with the world.’
