One morning in Nigeria, weakened by malaria, I was cared for by Baba Femi’s daughter, sister to young Femi and Mulara. She brewed Agbo leaves, treated me with steam and tea, and nursed me back to health. In that moment, I knew I was family—valued and protected.

Description

My Little Sister-#4 Kalajayie Street, Igbobi

One morning, I came out of my room in Nigeria, feeling weak. I sat on the bench in the hallway. Baba Femi’s daughter and the sister to young Femi and Mulara (seen in the photograph) came over, felt my forehead and said, “You have malaria!” She immediately went to the market, purchased some Agbo leaves, boiled them, covered my head with a blanket, had me inhale the steam and drink the tea. For three days, we repeated this process. The third day was the charm as my body settled back to normal. It was then that I knew I was a valued member of the compound. ‘They were not going to let me die on their watch.’
