In 1982, with journalist Lief Sorenson, I interviewed Fela Anikulapo-Kuti at his Ikeja home. That night at his Afrika Shrine, I witnessed a hypnotic, all-night performance with Egypt 70. Surrounded by ganga, ice cream, and electrifying Afrobeat, Fela’s brilliance left me spellbound—an unforgettable experience of music and culture.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti Black President

An early weekday morning of 1982, I and Swedish freelance journalist, Lief Sorenson found ourselves, knocking on the home door in Ikeja of Nigeria’s Afro-beat’s pioneer musician, requesting an interview about Nigeria’s prolific music scene from Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, for Lief’s media outlets in Sweden. Fela politely answered all Lief’s questions and invited us to attend a late-night concert inside his famous Afrika Shrine nightclub in Ikeja. “That night, Fela’s performance was hypnotic, spellbinding and in top form. Ganga and ice cream were being served at the rear of the Shrine. Fela, accompanied by his awesome band, Egypt 70, lit up the stage from midnight till dawn. It was an experience I’ll never forget!”
