Brewing Up a Storm

In 2003, I photographed a 24-hour dance marathon by Broadway Cares and Dancers Responding to AIDS. Performances dazzled, but when Martha Graham’s Dance Company took the floor, their power and elegance erupted through the room. Their choreography reminded me profoundly—there are levels to everything, and they were on another.

Description

Brewing Up a Storm-Short

This 2003 photograph was taken for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, a dedicated organization and support system for those affected by HIV. Broadway theaters have lost countless performers to the virus and in 2003, they partnered with a non-profit organization entitled Dancers Responding to Aids (DRA) on a dance marathon performance (24 hours) at St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery.

Various groups performed all types of beautiful modern dance movements. One by one, performance after performance, each company’s brilliant showmanship filled the rafters with grace and style; however, when Martha Graham’s Dance Company hit that wooden floor, you could feel their magnificent presence erupting in unspoken volumes of power, elegance, and professionalism, resonating boldly inside the beauty of their majestic choreography.

‘There are levels to everything!’
